How Many Push-Ups Should a Beginner Aim For?
If you can do 0 push-ups today, a realistic first goal is 2 clean ones, then roughly 5, then 10. If you already manage 10, aim for 20. Small, fixed jumps beat vague ambitions, because a target you can reach in weeks is one you will actually train for.
Why is “as many as possible” the wrong goal?
“As many as possible” is the wrong goal because it cannot be reached, only repeated, and a beginner needs a target that returns a yes or a no. Ask the internet how many push-ups you should do and you get charts with age brackets and percentiles. They answer a different question: how you compare to other people. That comparison does not train you. A goal trains you when it is close enough to reach and concrete enough to test.
That is why a fixed, small jump works better than a grand ambition. 0 to 2. 10 to 20. You can test it on any given day, on camera if you want a record, and the answer is yes or no, not “getting there”.
What are the jumps that work?
The jumps that work are small at the start and grow as the number grows, so that each one is reachable within weeks. The table below is the progression RepMaxxing uses for its own goal formula. It is not a law of nature; it is a rule of thumb with the one property that matters: every step is close.

Two things to notice. The first jumps are tiny on purpose: from 0, the skill of 1 honest rep is the whole battle, and doubling a small number is fast. Later jumps grow in steps of 10, because by then your body responds to volume. Peterson et al. (2011) followed 83 people through 12 weeks of progressive training and found the total volume of work done was strongly associated with the gain in maximal strength, with a standardised coefficient of 0.66 in men. Add a little, consistently, and the number moves.
How fast do beginners actually progress?
Beginners progress faster than they expect, provided the push-ups keep getting harder. Kotarsky et al. (2018) trained 14 men with progressive push-up variations 3 days a week for 4 weeks and measured a significant rise in both bench press strength and push-up progression, and the push-up gain was larger than in the group training with a barbell. 4 weeks is enough to see a real change when the load rises every session.
The frequency behind that result is the one this site recommends everywhere. Grgic et al. (2018) pooled 22 studies and found strength gains rose with training frequency, with effect sizes of 0.74, 0.82 and 0.93 at 1, 2 and 3 sessions a week. Rhea et al. (2003) analysed 140 studies and found untrained people gained most training each muscle group 3 days a week, at a moderate intensity of about 60 percent of their maximum. Three sessions a week, well short of all-out, is what the evidence points at for a beginner, and it is what the beginner calisthenics workout plan is built on.
What should you do between tests?
Between tests, train below your maximum and let the test be the only all-out day. Do not test daily. Train 2 or 3 times a week with sets at roughly half to 60 percent of your best, several rounds, about 2 minutes of rest between them (rule of thumb). If 0 is your maximum, train the pieces: incline push-ups against a table, wall push-ups if even that is too much, slow negatives from the top position, and test flat push-ups once a week.
Stopping short of failure costs you nothing on the number that matters. Robinson et al. (2024) ran meta-regressions across the research on how close to failure sets are taken and found a negligible relationship between reps left in reserve and strength gains; only muscle size grew more with sets taken closer to failure. For a beginner chasing a rep count, sets that end 2 or 3 reps short are the efficient version.

Does the number matter beyond the goal?
The number matters beyond the goal, because push-up capacity is one of the simplest measures of fitness there is, and it tracks health. Yang et al. (2019) followed 1,104 male firefighters for 10 years and found those who could complete more than 40 push-ups at baseline had a 96 percent lower rate of cardiovascular events than those who completed fewer than 10 (incidence rate ratio 0.04). The study is observational and only in men, so it shows association, not cause. It still makes 20, then 30, then 40 a number worth continuing toward after the first goal is done. Cadence matters when you count. Rozenek et al. (2022) tested 44 men and women at set cadences and found the most reps came at a self selected pace or 60 per minute, and that men self selected about 50 per minute against 43 for women. Test at your own pace, and use the same pace every time, so the number means the same thing from one test to the next.
What happens when you reach the number?
When you reach the number, test it on camera, take the next jump from the table, and repeat. A recorded rep settles the argument with yourself about whether it counted. How many push-ups should I be able to do as a total beginner?
0 is a normal starting point and nothing to fix before you start. A first goal of 2 clean push-ups is realistic within a few weeks of consistent practice; 5 and 10 follow the same pattern. Those steps are a rule of thumb, chosen because each one is reachable soon and testable on demand.
How fast can I go from 0 to 10 push-ups?
Most beginners training 2 or 3 short sessions a week reach 10 clean push-ups within 2 to 3 months, as a rule of thumb. Kotarsky et al. (2018) measured significant push-up progression after only 4 weeks of 3 sessions a week. The speed depends less on talent than on showing up and keeping the reps honest.
Should I train push-ups every day?
No. 2 or 3 sessions a week with rest days between them is enough for a beginner. Grgic et al. (2018) found strength gains rise with frequency up to 3 sessions a week, and Rhea et al. (2003) found untrained people gain most at 3 days a week. Daily maximum attempts mostly teach you to grind out ugly reps.
Is 20 push-ups good for a beginner?
Yes. 20 clean floor push-ups is a solid milestone that most beginners reach only after months of consistent training. Yang et al. (2019) found men who could do more than 40 had a far lower rate of cardiovascular events over 10 years than men who could do fewer than 10, so the number is worth building past 20 as well.
What counts as one clean push-up?
